UK: ‘From red and white to rainbow colours: Young activists challenging stereotypes and changing attitudes’.
It is not remarkable to see a rainbow flag signifying support for LGBT rights at demonstrations, unless that demonstration is organised by the ‘extreme right’. At the age of 19, Declan was asked to take over the leadership of the LGBT division of the movement of the English Defence League. He was visible at almost every national, and many local, demonstrations (like the one pictured here) carrying his rainbow flag proudly amidst the sea of St George’s crosses. This photo challenges us to reflect on our own stereotypes and see the potential for changing social attitudes in the places we least expect.
